A Town Called Hell (1971): A Brutal Western That Deserved Better

 The Western genre was changing rapidly in the early 1970s. Clean-cut heroes were giving way to morally gray antiheroes, violence became more graphic, and filmmakers were eager to blur the line between justice and revenge. A Town Called Hell embraces all of those trends, resulting in a dark, often overlooked Western that deserves another look. Originally released under the title A Town Called Bastard in some markets, the film stars Robert Shaw, Stella Stevens, Martin Landau, and Telly Savalas. On paper, that's an impressive cast, and while the movie never quite reaches the heights its talent suggests, it tells an engaging story that lingers long after the credits roll.
